Unik Articles: Is the Lords Prayer still relevant – George Nnadozie

As a child, we grew up thinking that something is wrong with our prayers when we don’t summarize it “Our Lord’s Prayer”, I even thought that the reason why we don’t get answers were because we did not pray that prayer. We were meant to understand it as a magic word that works wonders when recited! I treasured it as the Muslims treasured their recitations.

Many times we keep arguing over things that are so clear in the scriptures! Issues like the relevance of our Lord’s Prayer have always caused divisions among believers. Some argue that since Jesus prayed that prayer, it must be strictly adhered to! Well, that is number one lie! Jesus didn’t pray that prayer.

In Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus said “This, then, is how you should pray…”He didn’t say “this is how I pray!” Jesus prayed entirely a different prayer! Jesus never requested for daily bread because He had every supply He ever needed, Jesus also said the father is in Him and He is in the father! Jesus identified Himself as the express image of God! In John 10:30 Jesus said “I and the Father are one.” If that is true, then that prayer isn’t relevant for Him. He understands God beyond the father in heaven but the father inside of Him. His relationship with God is of a union!

“The Lord’s Prayer” isn’t a magic word or spell that we are meant to recite all the time. Jesus said to them “this is how you should pray” and not “this is what you should say”. Are you getting something? It was simply a guideline given to them, with that guideline they can understand what was God’s will for them so that they can pray according to God’s will! Jesus was simply giving those points to pray about and those points were in line with what He came to do! John the Baptist was a witness for this when he said in Matthew 3:2

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Jesus quoted the same thing when He said in Matthew 4:17

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Was Jesus talking about rapture? No! He was talking about the dwelling of God’s spirit in man which is only possible after the man has repented by believing in the finished work of Jesus. So, when He said “thy kingdom come” it was a demand and an echo of what has been established! God declared in Zechariah 2:10

“Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,” declares the LORD.”
