The Aletheia: Stop Being Religious Without Knowledge and Character by Pastor Patrick Emakpor

A man’s character is his fate. Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States (US), said: “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude”.

As a clergyman, I have observed how people self-sabotage themselves by seeking spiritual solutions to mental attitude and character-deficit issues. They look around at everybody as suspects for their predicaments when their greatest demons lurks within them – their mental attitude and character developed over time as a result of their mindset.

What we often call our destiny is truly a product of our mental attitude and character, and since that mental attitude and character can change, then destiny can be altered. The sum total of the content of your mind is your destiny.

Many believers usually argue back and forth on this intriguing question, the essence of this write up is not to get involved in arguments. But to open us up to a perspective that many a believer doesn’t pay attention to in their walk with God.

Arguments don’t improve the validity of a ‘truth;’ they only determine how long it would take before you realize it.

Your argument against a truth does not invalidate that the truth is true but only extend further the time you need to dwell more on your ignorance which is the stronghold of your adversary.

Many believers thinks that we can pray ourselves to success and get away with virtually anything if we stick to some prayer routines. This too is an overblown provision of God.

Hear this! There is no amount of spiritual penance that can substitute for your mental attitude and character. Sometimes, you need sound mental attitude, character and discipline and not prayers.

Dutch Sheets said: “Prayer is not a check request asking for things from God; it is a deposit slip- a way of depositing God’s character into our bankrupt souls.”

Please let me emphasize this at this point. I am not in any way trivializing the place of prayers in our walk with God. Prayer have its place. I am only putting forth the fact that there is much more to work out in our salvation than just praying.

I have seen frustrated prayer warriors. Who exert all their energy in prayers but no distance covered as a result no work done. To cover a distance you need to KNOW. I read in an article where the write said.

We have become so spiritually in tune through prayers that we neglect the place of character and our relationship with people. Many are actually ‘heavenly’ bound, but with no earthly relevance. You can speak with spiritual eloquence, pray in public and maintain a holy appearance, but it is your behavior and character that will actually trigger the manifestation of all that God has for you.

Now take note: your behavior is a function of the content of your mind.

Even God can not do anything without your mind. This is why He said your mind should be renewed. Transformation of your life is a continuous process and not a one time off thing.

Do not be conformed to this world, but continuously be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God’s will is—what is proper, pleasing, and perfect. – Romans 12:2 (ISV)

Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]. – Romans 12:2 (Amplified)

You must learn to renew your mind. But you don’t get your mind renewed by Prayers but by knowledge which form your character.

The Shunammite woman must have been praying for a child all through her life. By being hospitable to a man of God, she eventually got her much-awaited miracle. It wasn’t prayer that opened the door for her; it was her character. Assuming she wasn’t hospitable, she would have missed that important miracle and probably lived all her life childless and then conclude that it was her lot from God.

A man once said: “Many times, we pray, fast and bind demons that don’t exist when our real demons are just our greatly flawed character. Many have insulted people that were divinely placed and orchestrated to help them fulfil their destiny. Some people are keeping malice with their destiny helpers.”

Treat people with respect, treat strangers with courtesy. Never look down on anybody. God can use anyone to change your story.

Abigail Van Buren said: “The best index to a person’s character is how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and how he treats people who can’t fight back.”

Prayer is not EVERYTHING! Build relationships, build your family and don’t ever forget that God will always use man. Be mindful of your words and how you speak to people. Work seriously on your character and attitude towards life. It will do you good much more then prayers antidotes. When we are faced with some certain challenges we should know that the Spirit of God in us was not giving just to help our infirmity in prayers, by helping us to pray but that this Spirit was also given to bring us into Knowledge. Many Believers don’t even engaged Him in the Latter. All we know is Pray.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. – Romans 8:26 KJV

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. – 1 Corinthians 2:12 KJV

Paul counseled and let us know that the spirit was given that we might know.

As believers it is our responsibility to engage the spirit in search of knowledge renewing our mind.

For the greatest the deliverance a believer can attain is that obtained by the knowledge of the Word.

If a man’s captivity came by ignorance, He needs knowledge to walk out of it cheaply. Trying to come out of it by prayer will make out of him a frustrated prayer warrior.

Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst. – Isaiah 5:13 KJV

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. – Hosea 4:6 KJV

You can take personal responsibility to deliver yourself.

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. – Proverbs 6:2-5 KJV

but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. – Proverbs 11:9b KJV

You can not live a perpetual triumphant lifestyle without taking personal responsibility to renewing your mind by the word.

If all you know about God is what you were told then you don’t know God.

If every step you have ever taken is as you were told by someone else then you don’t have a leading of the Spirit.

Make a decision to keep renewing your mind today by the word. For God will not do anything without your Mind.

But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. – Phm 1:14 KJV

God needs your mindset to advance your life. Get it renewed by the Word. Wishing a prosperous October. Stick to the Word of God. It still work Wonders today.
