AfroGospel Gets Recognition From Music Streaming Platform Spotify
Some few years back, the genre AfroGospel was strange, despised and not ready to be associated with by many. Just like other genres were well represented on awards, international stages and lot more, AfroGospel was not well recognized.
Despite the heavy backlashes those who ventured into the genre from the church, lack of support and other problems they faced, they continually forged ahead breaking new grounds and gradually, the sound and genre is being sold out so well winning the attention of international acts and platforms.
It can be recalled that in 2021 when Canadian singer Justin Drew Bieber released his surprise EP FREEDOM, the once neglected genre AfroGospel found it’s way into the EP as the first track. Yet again, back home here in Nigeria, award winning Christian artist Frank Edwards released an EP titled ANGLICAN and it was dominated with the Afrobeat sound which was once neglected.
The most recent win to the AfroGospel genre is the addition of an AfroGospel editorial playlist by Spotify. Before now, the playlists highlighting AfroGospel songs were made by artists themselves or by other brands which support and love AfroGospel.
The playlist was created yesterday the 30th of July 2022 and the news was first broken out by the poster boy of the playlist Limoblaze. He took to his social media platforms to break the good news by sharing a screenshot of the playlist with the caption; When we started Afrogospel, there were no structures but we kept pushing and fighting hard for this genre. I’m proud about the fact that @spotify officially recognized this genre and created an editorial playlist and I have to say well done to Myself & everyone of the Artists that have been pushing this genre! We did it! Also thanks for half a million streams on “Jireh”.
The playlist which as at the time of this report has 170 likes and a total of 50 songs from different artists, the likes of Limoblaze, Prinx Emmanuel, Maikon West, Oba Reengy, Rehmaz, Omojo, Nolly, Princeton South, Kofi Dartey, K3ndrick, King Dareal, Lilmizzy, Protek Illasheva, Gil Joe, TB1, Okey Sokay, Paul Rarity, Ada Ehi, Kojo Dave, CalledOut Music and lot more.
This is a big win for the AfroGospel community and a motivation to many young ones in the genre and planning to pick it up as their primary genre.
Looking forward to more wins on the international music award levels and lot more. A big congratulations to all artists who made it to the playlist & the AfroGospel community in general.
